Somerford Corporation is a leading provider of assisted living and Alzheimer's care with 13 facilities located throughout California, Delaware, and Maryland. The company sets very high standards for resident care and has similarly high expectations for vendors. The recent shift to HR, payroll, and benefits outsourcing from a professional employer organization (PEO) represented a major change for the company. Much consideration and planning went into all facets of the change -- including vendor selection, implementation, training, and ongoing management of services.
According to Judy Huber, vice president of finance and administration for Somerford, the decision to seek HR and payroll outsourcing services was directly related to Somerford's growth. The acquisition of a California-based healthcare provider in October 2001 doubled Somerford's employee population and added six facilities to the company, and also increased the complexity of HR management.
"Up to this point, we were relying on a PEO for our payroll, HR, and administrative services needs. We knew we needed more control over our information, as well as an integrated HR, payroll, and benefits solution," said Huber. "However, we also knew we didn't want the cost or staffing requirements associated with managing an HR/payroll/benefits system infrastructure in house. Moving to a HR business processing outsourcing provider was the logical choice for us."
Huber appointed Idalee DiGregorio, director of human resources for Somerford, with the responsibility of selecting an outsourcing provider, leading the conversion process, and managing the new relationship.
"In addition to identifying vendors who offered a full range of services, we also needed to find a vendor that matched our own corporate culture," said DiGregorio. "We believe very strongly that we must extend the same level of caring and service to all Somerford staff as we do to our residents. Employee benefits and salaries are among our largest costs and therefore must be managed carefully."
According to DiGregorio, after evaluating more than 10 outsourcing vendors, large and small, Somerford selected Genesys. Selection criteria included: extensive experience with a web-based solution; demonstrated technical expertise; assignment of designated account managers; a comprehensive portfolio of services; cost; and a company size well-matched to Somerford's needs. "We didn't want our account to get lost in the shuffle at a huge service bureau, but we needed a vendor with significant industry experience and the resources required to give us personalized service," said DiGregorio. "We wanted to establish a long-term relationship, so company longevity was also important."
For Somerford, moving to Genesys has been the right decision. "Genesys has come through on everything they said they'd do," said Huber. "In the end, it's the relationships between people that make a decision successful. Companies should look for a vendor that has a philosophy similar to that of their own. And vendors should make sure they identify the specific needs and concerns of a prospect and not assume all companies are the same."
