| Do You Know Where Your Employees Are Surfing? |
Submitted by Dennis McCabe, Wavecrest Computing, a Genesys partner
Being in HR, you've heard all the horror stories about employees visiting pornography sites while online at work. And you know that such conduct can lead to some really nasty situations. Among these are sexual harassment lawsuits filed by innocent employees who were unwillingly exposed to pornographic images, thus being subjected to a "hostile workplace" environment.
But, as bad as this is, did you know that online gambling in the workplace is rapidly becoming an even more serious problem?
Here are some facts …
From: NY Times Online (July 6, 2001):
"Using the Internet, individuals can now play remarkably realistic casino gamesblackjack, roulette, poker and morefrom their personal computers. To critics, it is a potential source of massive addiction and loss …"
"Internet gambling is a booming business, that much is clear. Bear Stearns estimated that some 1,400 casino Web sites generated revenue of $1.5 billion last year from online gaming, a figure that will grow to $5 billion by 2003, it estimated."
From: Wall Street Research Net (02/25/2002):
"Online casinos are serious about getting people to try their luck on the Web. According to a new report by Jupiter Media Metrix, Internet gambling outfits increased online advertising 170 percent from December 2000 to December 2001, drawing 13.6 million Web users to their sites in December 2001. According to the report, 33 percent of visitors to gaming sites use the sites while at work. And casinos are now ranked fifth among 138 online industry segments, behind books, investment, consumer credit and travel."
Naturally, gambling of any kind, including online, can lead to serious problems for people that engage in it regularly. Not the least of these difficulties are financial ruin and addiction. While these are personal problems, they can also result in serious difficulties for employers. For example, an employee trying to cure his or her addiction may sue their employer for contributing to their problem by failing to block access to gambling sites!
Employers' problems are compounded even further by workers' visits to sports, finance, travel, music, hotmail and shopping sitesvisits that seriously reduce productivity. According to the Gartner Group, nonwork-related surfing costs American businesses $54 billion and 30%-40% in productivity losses every year. And the US Department of Labor estimates that wasted time costs corporations up to $3 million a year for every 1,000 employees.
Addressing and solving these problems without destroying workforce morale is not easy, but it can be done. In growing numbers, many organizations are addressing it head-on in a serious way, utilizing a combination of progressive management approaches, carefully crafted policies, and well-designed Web-use monitoring and filtering tools.

learn more about this subject, we recommend you visit www.wavecrest.net

suggestions related to policy-based Web-use management programs and
the software tools that support them.

| Paperless Reporting New Product |
Introducing the Cost-savings of Web-based Reporting
To both NT and Mainframe Software Customers
We could all use a lot less paper in our lives. At no point is this more apparent than when we're faced with printing and distribution of the many payroll- and HR-related reports produced at the end of the payroll run.
What if you could all but eliminate this process? What could you do with the time you save? Have you thought about the cost of the paper and the labor to handle it all? Studies have shown that conversion to an electronic process from a paper-based one can yield cost savings anywhere from 30% to 50%.
And what about the lag time between when the reports are produced and when they finally reach the hands of the individuals that need them?
Consider an alternative. With WEBWorks for Reporting from Genesys, you can realize time savings, labor savings and eliminate paper.
